Guidance for teachers

Setting up

  • give out the Food Cards so that the class can get familiar with them
  • Activity 1 - choose suitable selection of Food Cards
  • Activity 2 - divide the class up into 2 teams who then choose a section of cards with interesting healthy eating and food safety facts and prepare questions based on these facts

Activities

Activity 1
  1. each pupil in turn choose a card from the pack
  2. without showing it to the rest of the class, they must try and describe the food on the front without using its name
  3. clues can be taken from the information on the back of the Food Cards under the different headings
  4. the rest of the class are given the opportunity to guess the name of the food
  5. the pupil who guesses correctly can then take the next turn to choose a card to speak about
Activity 2
  1. each team is given a selection of Food Cards
  2. using the facts on the back of the cards, the team must come up with 10 questions for the other team to answer, for example "what can you use in recipes as a replacement for cream?"
  3. the teams then swap their selection of food cards and time is given to allow all members of the team to look over the cards
  4. the cards are then taken away, and the teams take turns to ask each other one of their questions
  5. points can be given for correct answers with the team earning most points by the end of the quiz being the winning team

Assessment opportunities

SAY – Can pupils make up suitable clues from facts on the card

SAY – Can pupils answer questions on healthy eating, cooking food safety and seasonality of foods on the food cards

Consider CfE Benchmarks, for example:

  • identifies ways to reduce the risk of food poisoning, for example reheating food until piping hot, safe food storage, different coloured chopping boards
  • outline at least 3 healthy eating messages, for example lowering salt and sugar intake

Activity 2:

  • pupils could continue to have access to the selection of Food cards while the questions are being asked
Challenge

Activity 1:

  • pupils could be given list of words other than the name of the food that they are not allowed to use when describing their food

Activity 2:

  • ask pupils to make up questions beginning with different question words, e.g. What? Where? When? How? etc
