We cover all aspects of the food chain in Scotland that can impact public health
Food Standards Scotland (FSS) was established in April 2015 under the Food (Scotland) Act 2015 as the new public sector food body for Scotland.
We are a non-ministerial office of the Scottish Administration, independent from Scottish Government Ministers and from industry, and accountable to the Scottish Parliament.
We regulate around 24,500 feed businesses, 97 fully approved meat premises and oversee the regulation of 71,536 that are regulated by 32 local authorities.
We provide advice on food safety, on authenticity and on consumer interests in relation to food, and on healthy diets.
Our Scottish Food Crime and Incidents Unit (SFCIU) is our dedicated incidents, investigations and intelligence gathering arm, which intervenes where necessary to protect consumers.
We develop policy in line with our regulatory strategy, with the Common Frameworks agreed between the UK Government and devolved governments, and with the UK’s international obligations.
We carry out research and produce evidence which influences policy development. This includes a wide range of research relating to food and feed issues, and nutrition and dietary health issues.
