Guidance for teachers

Our education resources are linked to Curriculum for Excellence and support teaching about healthy eating and food safety

About our resources

We’ve created free resources to help teachers across Scotland teach the food and health parts of the Curriculum for Excellence (CfE). These resources focus on healthy eating and food safety.

They were developed by experts at Food Standards Scotland and teachers. Topics include:

  • food groups
  • storing food safely
  • healthy eating
  • allergies and food labels
  • food hygiene and hand washing

The activities use fun tools like interactive games, food cards, and worksheets to keep pupils interested.

Food cards

Three cards placed on a desk. One displays cucumber, one displays carrots and the other has the word porridge on it.

Some activities use special food cards. Schools in Scotland can order them for free by emailing resources@fss.scot. Please include:

  • your name
  • your school
  • the delivery address

These cards are a great teaching tool on their own. They show over 100 foods with pictures and information about:

  • healthy eating
  • food safety
  • shopping
  • cooking

Teaching healthy eating messages

Our Healthy Eating Tutorial has been developed to help those might need to provide healthy eating messages as part of their job, such as teachers and community groups. It can be used by anyone who has an interest in healthy eating.
