Information for business about Food Hygiene Information Scheme and Eat Safe Awards
Both the Food Hygiene Information Scheme (FHIS) and the Eat Safe Award give clear information about how clean and safe food businesses are. This helps people choose where to eat or buy food with confidence.
We run both schemes in partnership with local authorities in Scotland. Food businesses in England, Wales and Northern Ireland are assessed by the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme. This is run by the Food Standards Agency, in partnership with local authorities.
FHIS checks if a business meets the basic legal standards for food hygiene.
The Eat Safe Award goes a step further - it recognises businesses that go above and beyond those legal requirements.
The Food Hygiene Information Scheme (FHIS) effectively 'opens the door' to the kitchen or food areas. The inspection checks that your business complies with food hygiene law and that food is safe to eat.
The Eat Safe Award provides people with a recognisable sign of excellence in food hygiene standards.
Businesses are assessed for the Award during their scheduled inspections.
