  • HWB 0-15a - I am developing my understanding of the human body and can use this knowledge to maintain and improve my wellbeing and health.
  • HWB 1-29a
  • HWB 1-30a - By investigating the range of foods available I can discuss how they contribute to a healthy diet.
  • HWB 1-30b
  • recognise that a range of food can be enjoyed and that people have different likes and dislikes
  • gather relevant information to feedback to the class by talking with a family member
  • write a familiar healthy recipe

Resources

  • Food Cards*
  • homelink sheet with question prompts
  • recipe template

*If your school does not have a set of Food Cards, please request them from us at resources@fss.scot.

Setting up

  • set out a selection of Food Cards that it is likely pupils will commonly experience at home
    • photocopy 2 -3 cards per pupil cards to send home and attach to Homelink sheet for each pupil
  • photocopy recipe template

Activities

  • before sending cards home, ensure each pupil is familiar with the foods that are represented and have seen/eaten it in their home before
  • go over Homelink sheet with pupils, making the expectations clear
  • set appropriate time to allow all pupils to bring back their meal ideas
  • pupils take home selected food cards and ask their family/friends what their favourite meals are using one or more of these ingredients
  • encourage parents to send in pictures of suggested meals for display
  • pupils feed back their suggestions orally to the rest of the class, using Homelink sheet as a prompt
    • discussion on how they might make it healthier, this could include looking at the Eatwell Guide for suitable food swaps in the recipe.
  • using the recipe template, pupils take their meal and write it into a recipe for inclusion in an ‘Our Favourite Meals’ recipe booklet

This could be extended as an enterprise activity with pupils producing and selling copies of the recipe book.

Assessment opportunities

SAY – Can pupils present their meal suggestions from home to the rest of the class?

WRITE – Can pupils write out their given recipe in the format given?

Consider CfE Benchmarks, for example:

  • explains likes and dislikes in relation to food
  • chooses appropriate foods to prepare for a given situation
  • assists in preparing healthy dishes for a variety of occasions, for example, an inter-generational visit

Differentiation

Support

Recipes could be ready typed and cut into steps. The pupils must then sequence the steps appropriately.

Challenge

Pupils could be encouraged to draw pictures of the foods to match their recipes or take photos themselves to print out in school.
