Could you confirm whether or not it is a legal requirement for a B&B to be registered as a food business?

If so, could you please give us the number of Bed & Breakfasts in Scotland who are registered as food businesses?

If this information can be broken down by Local Authority, that would be most helpful.

Could you also explain how businesses can prove they are registered?  Is there a public register, or a registration number scheme?

And finally, may we request what communications campaigns have been run by FSS in the last five years to publicise to B&Bs the requirement for them to be registered (if it is a requirement)?

It is a legal requirement for any business that serves food to be registered as a food business with their Local Authority in Scotland.

Currently there are 2,996 Hotel/Bed & Breakfast/Guest House registered in Scotland.

If a business is registered then they will appear on the Food Hygiene Information Scheme search on our website.

There have been no campaigns by Food Standards Scotland on requirements for B&Bs to register with their Local Authority.
